'Junior Garr’s powerful debut ‘Only You’ challenges the stereotype of an independent EP just by it’s sonic maturity...'
That quote came from Junior Garr's press release.
Singer, songwriter and musician, Junior has been in the background for a while, a worship leader at London’s Ruach Ministries, contributor to Re:newed's 'The Renewal Project' (remember that?), Jake Isaac’s excellent ‘I=Change’ album, as well as his own group Wayiqqra, to name a few. He's paid his dues.
Still, the press release blurb is apt, because - as you'll hear yourself - 'Only You' is sonically distinct, bringing a different aural expression to UK gospel music output not just for 2010, but also in terms of releases put out over the past few years.
It's a great 5-track selection, and it was good to have Junior in the studio to hear him talk track-by-track about the CD.
He talked about his musical influences which range from US Jazz artist Chick Corea to the phenomenal Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti, to international African supergroup Osibisa.
Production comes from renowned UK gospel super producer Nicky Brown (who has worked with many global names) and Ray Djan Jnr, with input from major new talent like Jake Isaac.
I can't finish this without mentioning the quality of the songwriting on 'Only You', which is sublime. I love wordcraft and its relationship with and to music, and Junior along with the team that worked on this solid project have definitely delivered something that is going to be around for quite a while, I think...
This is a heartfelt worship selection that - given the right circumstances - will touch everyone that comes across it. It's that good.
I think you'll really like it - I certainly do!
