V9 Collective - Make Me Happy

In an age when overzealous sampling and lazy interpolation is pretty much de rigueur, coming across new songs paying homage to its source material while adding something 'extra fresh' to the UK Gospel music canon at the same time is indeed a rare thing.

    Excitement

I could barely contain my excitement when I finally got to hear a 3-song shortlist of new music from London's V9 Collective a few weeks ago, sent to select friends ahead of release.

And - joy of joys - 'Make Me Happy' is the song the team finally chose to release from the set as the lead single, ahead of their as-yet-unnamed new album - it was the one I desperately hoped they'd go with. Yay!

This of course is off the back of their fantastically well-received 2010 debut 'World To Me', an excellent collection of stong RnB and Soul-influenced gems, some of which made their way as regular fixtures on to personal and radio playlists across the land - so the pressure is definitely on for a just-as-strong follow-up.

    Extra Fresh

And the 'extra fresh' thing I mentioned..? Fans of Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards' production work will immediately recognise the Chic throwback sound: excellent, layered relationship between lead guitar, strings and bass.

Then there's the lyric to Make Me Happy: clearly Christian, accessible without being apologetic and just - good.

'Make Me Happy' is easily one of my favourite songs of 2015, and will no doubt go on to be another one of my favourite UK Gospel songs, full stop.
