Music Review: Caleb Quaye and the Faculty: Out of the Blue (Caleb Quaye, 2010)

Okay, this might not be 'urban' the way stuff normally reviewed here is, but it's worthy of a review, in my humble opinion.

The artist responsible for this fine jazz offering lives in California, but he's definitely British – and as rock fans of a certain age will testify, he's a man who has more than earned his place in British rock history.

Caleb Quaye and the Faculty: Out of the Blue

'Greatest Guitarist in the World...'

Caleb Quaye produced the demos that launched the
career of a young Elton John back at the start of the
  70s.

He played guitar in Elton's band for many years; he
also played on the soundtrack of the cult film Tommy
and for several other big names, including Hall &
Oates. Eric Clapton reckons he's the greatest
  guitarist in the world.

If all this is a bit before your time, you may be more
familiar with Caleb’s equally talented younger brother,
  Finley Quaye.

Smooth Jazz - and Rock
These days, Caleb is a worship pastor and a teacher. But when it comes to the guitar, he still abounds in licks – as a listen to his new album Out of the Blue will testify.

Jazz and blues have always a big influence on Caleb's sound, and it shows. Whilst much of Out of the Blue is accessible to most ‘smooth jazz’ fans, once Caleb starts soloing he isn’t afraid to wander into rock territory.

Just listen to the way the guitar soars on ‘Ask and You Shall Receive’, for instance. ‘Walking by Faith’ and the Latin-tinged ‘Changing Seasons’ also stand out, as does the more down-tempo ‘Things Unseen’.

With a fine band supporting him, Caleb and his guitar cook up a captivating sound that’s comforting to the soul.

As that bloke on the Fast Show used to say: “Welcome to Jazz Club. Nice.”

Rating: 5 out of 5
