Music Review: Triple O - 24 - The Gratitude EP (Mixtape - May, 2011)
Henry Yanney sizes up the current set from Triple O, released last month, and a teaser ahead of his long-awaited debut album due out next month...
London based hiphop artist and writer - get Updates!
It seems like 2011 is the year in which Gospel
Grime and Hip Hop artist Triple O has really
stood out amongst the rest.
Not only has he released a remarkable EP in ‘The
Overnight Garden’, his late 2010 track ‘Come
Home’ has spawned numerous remixes from Urban
Gospel greats and been on constant rotation on
radio playlists for some time.
Looking to add to his current hot streak of great
releases, the East London rhymer releases yet
another free EP this year: 24: The Gratitude.
Uplifting Vibes
Although the title of the mixtape is based around the popular TV series 24, it is only the intro that has any bearing to the long running series as Triple takes on the guise of Jack Bauer in the short opener to the eight-track EP.
From that moment onwards, it’s pure uplifting vibes as the rapper gets down to giving thanks to the Most High on ‘Thank You Lord’, a two step rhythm which embraces a bouncy style which all will move along to.
Keeping with the thanksgiving notion ‘Hosanna’ is another three minute plus Hip-Hop-meets-traditional Gospel experience that is executed well.
But unlike his previous EP, the mood on 24 constantly switches with an array of differing moods and beats, which Triple O does well to adapt to.
The reflective ‘What Do I Do Now’ meshes a harmonic production with a rapid fire delivery which somewhat takes away the confessional/meditative feeling which exists.
However Triple O’s lyrical prowess finds itself at home on the impressive Breathe Easy in which a darker, Grimier score gives him the perfect bed to lay his double time rapping style over, and conjures up some clever wordplay in between the hype which ensues.
Consistent Hybrid
Staying true to traditional Gospel AND embracing the more modern forms of music is often a difficult task which many artists unsuccessfully attempt, yet Triple O clearly demonstrates the possibilities of creating a consistent hybrid between the Gospel and other genres.
Older, more lyrically conscious fans will give numerous nods of approval to Triple’s verses filled with scripture and double-entendres, whilst the music on hand will capture the masses as its brushes with Grime, Worship, Hip-Hop and Gospel, all handled with much precision and quality.
Noteworthy
Another inspiring offer from Triple O, 24: The Gratitude is another noteworthy project from an artist who continues to mature with each new outing.
