Representing and publishing news from the best established and emerging Urban gospel scene in the UK
Arguably the very best one yet! Yinka, George, Angel, Faith, Karl and Phil talk about the things we all talk about but never admit!
Comment on this podcast
I think one of the main challenges for contemporary Christianity revolves around the sharing of a simple, direct gospel outside of church walls.
Broadcasting the Christian message to non-Christians (having hopefully stripped it of potentially distracting liturgy) arguably remains one of our biggest challenges in getting the gospel accepted (or at least acceptable) by people of other or no faith.

London based hiphop artist and writer - get Updates!
Example: it's one thing to talk about
damnation and hellfire when your target
audience is in sync with the context of your
exposition...
But it's an entirely different kettle
of fish trying to bring home the same
message to someone whose world view
revolves around totally different matters.
1 Corinthians Chapter 9 comes to mind. Full links at the end of the piece so you can read it for yourself.
CHALLENGE...
The upshot? The challenge of sharing the gospel becomes one of content, context and - perhaps most crucially - relevance. The Christ and Christianity you share has to have some direct connection to the people you're engaging with.
It's against this backdrop that Uprise TV has started the promotional campaign for its latest programme, Uprise Presents... Word From The Street.
SIMPLE CONCEPT...
The show concept is simple enough: take a non-Christian and bring them unannounced to a Christian event to get their take on proceedings.
It's a brave move, most especially considering
the character on offer.
Darrell James (pictured) is a man of
interesting contraditions. He used to sell guns
on London's streets, but a few seconds in his
company confirms sharp intelligence.
I don’t know his story but he’s articulate,
quick-witted, passionate, and - this is where
Uprise took a bold step - is highly critical of the church's lack of action (as he sees it) in tackling the problems on the capital's streets, particularly around gun and knife crime.
REACTION
So what will Darrell's opinion be when he comes face to face with the uprise taking place in the Urban gospel underground?
Darrel was taken to was GL Live, arguably the Urban gospel scene's showcase concert, and possibly the very best example of a contemporary gospel event of its kind.
I've seen rushes of the programme in the OHTV studios, but I haven't seen it all the way to the end, so I - along with everyone else - will be locked in to Sky 199 to find out.
RELEVANT
I'm a huge fan of Uprise TV, and not just because they do a phenomenal job of chronicling the Urban gospel scene in the UK, but because with show formats like this they bring challenging stuff to the fore.
How many shows have you seen that take the risk of examining the impact of the faith from the outside looking in..? On the surface if it, asking your critic how you're doing isn't the smartest thing ever, but - when you think of it - who best to tell you how effective you're actually being...?
The documentary comes to OH TV this November. Watch the rather excellent programme promo below...
